Information about Salmonella
Don’t underestimate the risk of salmonella, especially if you have a weak immune system, have young children, or are over 65. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), salmonella causes more than 1.3 million infections every year. Of those who become ill, 26,500 require hospitalization. There are also around 420 deaths each year due to salmonella outbreaks.
The CDC says that food is the most common source of salmonella. While most people experience symptoms for 4-7 days and require no medical treatment, there are some at-risk individuals who may need more care. These individuals include:
- Infants under 12 months
- Adults over 65
- People who have a severe illness
- People who have a weak immune system
- Adults with disease like heart disease
- Adults with HIV
- People undergoing chemotherapy
Among these individuals, salmonella symptoms may be more severe and may require hospitalization. Salmonella infections can cause more serious health problems like dehydration or reactive arthritis.
