In Depth NEC Information

Recently, our site MedMalFirm.com published a series of blog posts with information about necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). NEC is a deadly gastrointestinal infection that affects 1-5% of premature infants in neonatal intensive care units (NICU). It is the most common intestinal disease among newborns, and sadly, has a mortality rate of 20-30%.

The reason why awareness is so important is because researchers have linked cow’s milk-based formulas to the development of NEC. The bodies of most premature newborns cannot properly process and digest cow’s milk proteins, which can lead to formula lingering in the intestines. When this happens, bacteria builds up and the baby’s immune system begins to fight.

Unfortunately, the bacteria buildup and subsequent immune response and damage intestinal tissue, or cause it to die (necrosis). Bowel perforation and sepsis are two very dangerous consequences of the disease.

Take a look at the research and information that the team at MedMalFirm.com has shared, some of which could provide hope for prevention and treatment of this terrible disease.

Have Questions about Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC)?

If your baby has been diagnosed with necrotizing enterocolitis, you may find it helpful to speak with a lawyer.  Your baby’s illness may be the result of negligence, such as your doctor failing to recognize the symptoms, misdiagnosing the condition, or failing to follow medical standards.

We know that cow’s milk-based formulas are linked to NEC, but parents are not given this information while their babies are in NICU. Formula containers also do not include warnings about such diseases when using the products.
